DIY: Shooting Your Own Content

Small Business Tips

Should you shoot your Video in Portrait or Landscape?

Does shooting in Portrait or Landscape mode make you more professional to your viewer?

If you’re not sure what I mean, Portrait mode, in this case, refers to holding the phone vertically when shooting. Landscape mode refers to holding your camera or phone horizontally.
In my opinion, every video you shoot needs to be in Landscape mode, and here’s why:

If you’re not sure what I mean, Portrait mode, in this case, refers to holding the phone vertically when shooting. Landscape mode refers to holding your camera or phone horizontally.

So, a thought has popped into your head, and you know your customers on your Facebook page will get so much value out of the tips you are about to share. You grab your camera, sit in your favourite chair, hold the camera up and start filming. But, which way are you holding the camera? Portrait or Landscape?

Now, before you roll your eyes, or claim, “it doesn’t matter”, take a pause, and think. Why is this such a debate? Why would someone like myself be bringing something like this up? Why is the debate between Portrait or Landscape mode such a huge deal, even in 2018?

Why Does This Matter?

People like watching video in Landscape mode: Professional Videographers and Filmmakers shoot and feature their content in Landscape mode. We are used to watching films at the cinema in Landscape mode. Therefore, if you are shooting your own content, people will naturally expect to watch the content in Landscape mode. Yes, they may not say, “jeez I’m so glad this video is in landscape mode”, but people have become conditioned to associate videos in this format with professional content. It gives you that extra edge, and that can’t be a bad thing!

Your Devices Are Setup For Landscape Content

Plus, mobile, Desktop and Tablets are designed to feature content in Landscape Mode. Even if people do shoot their video in Portrait mode, all of the devices will “help” to make it Landscape by adding black bars either side of the content. This is wasted space, and makes it inconvenient for viewers, and again, that little voice in the back of their head, will say unprofessional video maker. So, utilise the space, and shoot your content in a mode that makes your video on all of the devices happy.

It Even Works On Square Content

This will also help when creating Square content. The dimensions for square content allows for the height of the video to be the same as shooting in Landscape – all it will do is cut off the sides. So, if you are positioned in the centre of the frame, you will be able to easily create square content – perfect for Facebook or Instagram.

What About On Social Media Platforms?

Yes, even shooting a video with Instagram. The dimensions for Instagram allows for the height of the video to be the same as shooting in Landscape, all it will do is “cut-off” the sides. So, if you are positioned in the middle of frame, then you should be able to upload a beautifully high res video to Instagram. If you do shoot a video in Portrait mode for Instagram, it will still cut the sides off, but the other way. So you risk cutting off your head, and parts of your torso, which does not look professional and distracts the viewer from your message.
